Based on the look you want, the radius of this area can be increased or decreased in size. The Control Point shown in this image is on the blue sky. As with the other software in the Nik Collection, the top control (on your control point) allows you to change the radius/size of your adjustment area. ![]() You can use Control Points on any part of the image you want to change. Imagine the possibilities of applying structure, color, exposure changes, or doing shadow recovery to only areas you choose, knowing that the software is going to blend in your changes seamlessly. Yes, you can still do global or image-wide adjustments, but it is very useful to be able to later refine only selected areas. Viveza is an easy way to apply enhancements selectively without creating masks. The structure in this software adds depth to the photo by adding some sharpening. The loupe view (circled in red), shows the applied noise reduction on the right side – this view is at 100%. In the image above, the little squares denote what the software determined were areas requiring noise measurement. This allows the quick reduction of noise in your photos while retaining the edges, and in one click applies the calculated noise reduction to the image. Dfine selects areas of your image and generates a “noise profile”. Image noise characteristics deviate with exposure length, ISO settings and even temperature based on your camera. Dfineĭfine is Nik’s answer to noise reduction. Layering equates to endless possibilities for your final edit. The Nik Collection is comprised of Analog Efex Pro, Color Efex Pro, Dfine, HDR Efex Pro, Sharpener Pro, Silver Efex Pro and Viveza. This would have the same effect since syncing would occur and the backup would eventually be sync’d to Dropbox. So why bother at all? why not just say it’s a ‘local folder or drive’ on my computer and point it to: So near as I can figure, if I put in (Dropbox user) as a destination on the server \MYBACKUP that will be translated c:\users\username\Dropbox\MYBACKUPS. Based on what ts678 has said (and what it looks like when I try to use), you point the proprietary backup to the folder within your system. The bottom line is that I’d rather NOT store backup data locally on the server.Īnd I’m still not getting the concept of using (any of the) proprietary storage mechanisms like Dropbox and say onedrive etc etc. So dumping down backups (even incrementals) would kill our GCI very quickly. at least 1 Tb), but VERY limited space locally. Regardless …Path on Server… is confusing and I have trolled the manual etc etc and cannot find an answer. I ASSUME I do not need Dropbox installed, I simply need to be able to get the path on server (URL of the backup folder), but HOW DO I DO THIS? When I just look at the folder with Dropbox web it has a URL of that says …home…Ĭlearly that’s a folder for everybody in the globe, how can I find out what ‘home’ should be? In the Duplicati screen I have selected Dropbox. I am trying to setup Dropbox as the destination. Apologies for the newbie question (I was also using crashplan). 8/11/2023 0 Comments Reflection definition biologyWe also remark on the assumptions that are made if a criterion is not met. Second, we provide detailed criteria for genuine replication that are applicable to all biological experiments and that researchers can use to design their experiments. We introduce instead the concept of biological units (BUs), EUs, and observational units (OUs), and argue that they can clarify where replication needs to occur. What do we hope to achieve with yet another discussion? First, we argue that the frequent and common distinction made between ‘biological’ and ‘technical’ replication is unhelpful because they are inconsistently defined, do not capture the important characteristics of an experiment, and do not clarify what to replicate. But, paraphrasing Goodman's comment on misinterpreting p-values, ‘these lessons appear to be either unread, ignored, not believed, or forgotten as each new wave of researchers is introduced to research’. Dunn discussed the distinction in 1929, and papers and books warning of the genuine versus pseudoreplication distinction have appeared regularly (with four papers and a book chapter in the past year). Sometimes it is less clear what aspect of an experiment should be replicated to increase the sample size, and far too often the wrong aspect is chosen. ![]() The wrong choice of replicate cannot be fixed by a clever statistical analysis after the experiment is completed (e.g., using multilevel or hierarchical models) it needs to be planned at the design stage. The multiple measurements on these 2 mice do not contribute to N and thus constitute pseudoreplication. Both designs provide 10 data points to calculate a p-value, but the p-value is meaningless for the first design because the hypothesis is about sex differences, and there is only 1 member of each sex. He could (1) weigh the brain of 1 male and 1 female mouse 5 times, or (2) weigh the brain of 5 male and 5 female mice once. An example will illustrate the difference: suppose a researcher hypothesises that male mice have heavier brains than female mice. Confusing pseudoreplication for genuine replication artificially inflates the sample size, thereby inflating the apparent evidence supporting a scientific claim, and contributes to irreproducible results. The second type is replication that does not increase the sample size and is called pseudoreplication. It is called true, genuine, or absolute replication, and when these qualifiers are not used, replication is understood to mean this type. The first is replication that increases the sample size ( N) and thus contributes to testing an experimental hypothesis. It does not refer to researchers trying to reproduce or replicate their own or others' results.īoth statisticians and biologists agree on the importance of replication and distinguish between two types. The term ‘replication’ has several related meanings, and here it refers to the classic statistical definition of an intervention or treatment applied to multiple biological entities (experimental units ). We focus here on replication-a critical part of experimental design that is often misunderstood, leading to poor design choices, which in turn contribute to irreproducible or meaningless results. We argue that distinguishing between biological units, experimental units, and observational units clarifies where replication should occur, describe the criteria for genuine replication, and provide concrete examples of in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo experimental designs.ĭesigning experiments is challenging: there are many options to consider, decisions to make, and trade-offs to weigh, and a single poor design choice can make an experiment nearly worthless. Pseudoreplication artificially inflates the sample size, and thus the evidence for a scientific claim, resulting in false positives. Nearly half of the studies (46%, 95% CI = 38%–53%) had pseudoreplication while 32% (95% CI = 26%–39%) provided insufficient information to make a judgement. We found that only 22% of studies (95% CI = 17%–29%) replicated the correct entity–intervention pair and thus made valid statistical inferences. We surveyed a random sample of published animal experiments from 2011 to 2016 where interventions were applied to parents and effects examined in the offspring, as regulatory authorities provide clear guidelines on replication with such designs. If the wrong entity–intervention pair is chosen, an experiment cannot address the question of interest. When done appropriately, independent replication of the entity–intervention pair contributes to the sample size ( N) and forms the basis of statistical inference. ![]() ![]() Biologists determine experimental effects by perturbing biological entities or units. 8/11/2023 0 Comments Powerpuff girl buttercup shadow![]() " Small World: Heart to Heartstone Part 4":ģ. 8/10/2023 0 Comments Conquer private![]() ![]() Muslims had been looting the country for 600 years. Also, contrary to popular belief, by the time the Europeans came, not many riches were left in India. Contracting any of these diseases meant almost certain death, as those days, medicines were most rudimentary, and antibiotics unheard of. Another welcome for the incoming Europeans was in the form of tropical diseases like malaria, tuberculosis, cholera and the like. England is freezing cold and almost dustless. On landing in India, the Europeans were met with the dust and heat of India. But for these exceptional qualities there no way ‘so few could have overcome so many, in such a short time’. In addition, to show of raw courage in the battlefield, these powers showed exceptional diplomatic skills, in pitting one Indian power against another. ![]() Besides fighting the Indians, these two countries fought each other in India, on the high seas and back home in Europe. The Portuguese were the first to come, but also the first to withdraw, leaving the field to the French and the British. The navies of each of these countries had orders to sink the ships of the other two. Of these, the three more important ones were Portugal (a tiny country), France and England. It is doubtful if the Hindus would been have ever able to do that on their own.Ī number of European countries, medium to small, threw their hats in the ring. To start with, the British rid Bharat of the Muslim rule of 600 years. If they finally succeeded in taking over Bharat, they had earned it. The sheer scale of their adventurous spirit and audacity of their enterprise is breath taking. Once on the sea, the Europeans had to depend solely on their wit and grit, determination and raw courage. In short, the odds against the European adventurers were the most formidable that can be imagined. If they lost in the battle, they did not have the option to back home. In an emergency, it would take 6 to 8 months to send a message home, and even longer to get any succor. There were no telephones, not even telegraphic facilities. The ships had to depend on favorable winds and were often blown off course. We may recall that in those days, there were only sail ships (no steam ships), no Suez Canal, no established sea-lanes, and no navigational aids worth the name. The Europeans came from a land that was nearly 6 to 8 months’ ship-ride away, with no resting places or looting opportunities on the way. Muhammad Ghauri did exactly that after his defeat in 1191 AD. In an emergency, the Muslims could always hope to get back, or get reinforcements. The Muslim invaders had come from lands that were 2 to 3 weeks’ horse-ride away, with lots of resting places and looting opportunities on the way. Even the color of the skin of these new people was different and so were their mores and manners. With Hindus unwilling and unready to take over Delhi, a new religion (Christianity) and a new race from the distant land of Europe filed their claim to rule this ancient holy Hindu land. In 1761 AD, Ahmed Shah Abdali put an end to their dreams of a Hindu empire. However, due to their Hindu mindset, they hesitated to deliver the final blow and did not occupy the Delhi throne themselves. They had the power to install or remove kings on the (nominal) Mughal throne. They over-ran Delhi twice and Punjab once. The Marathas repeatedly defeated Muslim powers, including the Mughals, the Nizam of Hyderabad and the Nawab of Awadh. The Marathas: They were the dominant Hindu power in the 18th century AD.However, for some reasons, they showed no inclination and appeared to have lost their zest for warfare. The Rajputs: In view of their martial credentials, Rajputs had the wherewithal to take over Delhi on the decline of the Mughal power. But their enthusiasm for the national role was curbed by nine invasions of Ahmed Shah Abdali, during 1748–61 AD. The Sikhs: The Sikhs had emerged as a martial race by the first half of the 18th century, after founding of the Khalsa by Guru Govind Singh around 1700 AD. |
